HOT STONE MASSAGE THERAPY
(Also known as Thermotherapy)
- Stones of all shapes and sizes and varying temperatures, ranging from
zero to about 140 degrees, are used during hot stone massage therapy
to bring about physical healing and mental relaxation.
Warm stones encourage the exchange of blood and lymph and provide soothing
heat for deep-tissue work. Cold stones aid with inflammation, and moving
blood out of the area. Stones are placed in varying positions on the
body for energy balancing or may be used by the therapist for specific
trigger point work, (Deep Tissue Massage, and/or Neuromuscular Therapy),
or used in the palms of the therapist's hands to apply different massage
techniques.
The alternating use of heat and/or cold of thermotherapy brings the
entire body into the healing process, with a rapid exchange of blood
and oxygen, and alternating rise and fall of the respiration rate as
the body seeks homeostasis, (The body's attempt to maintain equilibrium
of all of its' functions.)
Hot stone therapy, in general, is a wonderful way to relax while having
the body heal.
